Another rain storm kept us home most of the weekend, and it was nice and cozy inside with a little baking and making. We indulged in some baklava (a rich Greek layered bar cookie) with ground walnuts and cinnamon, between flaky fillo--and way too much butter and sugar. YUM! Such a dangerous thing to have sitting around on the kitchen counter. Especially with the addition of chocolate on the top. Thank goodness we only make this once a year.
In the meantime, we finished our falling leaves mobile. Initially we thought a small grapevine wreath would look neat to suspend the felt leaves from, but ended up using a round bamboo purse handle instead. Which actually worked quite nicely. The leaves are sewn together with different colors, so that when they turn the colors change. We also used some of the felt beads we made earlier in September. I wanted to keep this simple, but the addition of a few sequins and shiny beads added just enough sparkle, like rain drops and dew. A fun and easy project even for children to make. I really like it.
Beautiful! We might have to try it...

What a beautiful thing. The beads make it even more beautiful. Your home school sounds like a very nice place to start one's education.

I love it! it reminds me of when I saw in a Japanese craft book. I have been thinking about making that one for my son's room. Yours is even better witht the Fall leaves...once a again true inspiration!!

The mobile is fantastic. Well done. I love a good baklava but I've never made it myself. Wonderful combination of nuts/honey and pastry. Sounds like a perfect weekend.

So glad you're all feeling better. The falling leaf mobile is really charming. I love baklava! I applaud your self-control; I'm not sure I could trust myself to have a whole pan of it in the house! One more reason I haven't attempted to make it: I'm intimidated by all the layers of filo dough. I can be a little ham-fisted with pastry. Once again I'm impressed by your many talents!

What a beautiful mobile. Great idea to have different colors on both sides of leaves. I love it!
