1935 Sunbonnet Sue Quilt
01/24/2014
Introducing an old fashioned Sunbonnet Sue applique quilt pattern from 1935.
This sweet pattern was distributed through a variety of newspapers back in the day and was originally a traceable pattern. It's been reprinted as an iron-on transfer.
I've included directions for doing traditional applique and freezer paper applique (my favorite) method, along with updated detailed directions for making the quilt.
If you use the same fabric print for all the pieces it creates a silhouette effect! Any way you make it, it's quite charming. Here's an applique block that I made just using some fabric scraps that I had.
The finished motif size is about 10". A 13-inch block is suggested for the quilt. If applique is not your thing, the motif can also be embroidered as-is without the addition of piece-work.
